Darth Maul returns to the forefront of the Star Wars universe. Disney released the first trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord, an animated series that promises a much harsher and more violent tone.
The project was announced in April 2025 during the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo and already has a confirmed date. It will premiere on April 6, 2026 on Disney+, with two episodes per week.

Far from classic epic
The story takes place after the events of The Clone Wars, during the consolidation of the Empire. In that harsh context, Maul tries to rebuild his power from the shadows, far from large armies and closer to organized crime.
The series takes place on Janix, a planet outside imperial control, ideal for the former Sith to rebuild his criminal syndicate by taking advantage of the chaos of the postwar period.
A key piece within canon
For years, Lucasfilm has been developing Maul mainly in animation. His evolution, downfall, and obsessions were told in greater depth in Rebels, where he had a strong narrative closure.
Shadow Lord aims to complete that journey by showing the intermediate period between the cold strategist and the character consumed by vengeance.
The big hook: a new Sith apprentice
One of the most striking points of the trailer is the introduction of Devon Izara, Maul's new apprentice, voiced by Gideon Adlon. This is not a decorative character, but a central and dangerous bond.
Uno de los puntos más llamativos del tráiler es la presentación de Devon Izara
Maul finds someone marked by the Empire and turns that person into a disciple, with a relationship that oscillates between control and latent threat.
Old Lucas ideas
The announcement revived comparisons with Darth Talon, a character from the old Legends universe. For years, that figure was associated with a Maul crime lord with an apprentice.
It even emerged that George Lucas considered similar ideas in early sketches of the sequel trilogy, although the current canon reinterprets those concepts.

The release strategy
Disney will bet on two weekly episodes, an intermediate format between a full-season drop and the traditional weekly episode.
The intention is clear: Disney wants to maintain interest, generate sustained conversation on social media, and prevent the series from being consumed in a single weekend.
