Shooting breaks out in New York while Mamdani is vacationing in Uganda
A massive shooting in a building left at least five dead, while the Democratic candidate for the city's mayor office is on vacation in Uganda.
A mass shooting shook the heart of downtown Manhattan on Monday night, when a gunman stormed a luxury skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, leaving at least five dead, including a New York police officer, and several injured.
The striker, identified as Shane Tamura, 27 years old, entered the building with a rifle around 6:30 p.m., during rush hour, and opened fire on employees, security, and visitors before taking his own life.
The 44-story building houses major corporate headquarters such as Blackstone, NFL, and KPMG US, among others. During the attack, NFL employees were instructed to shelter in their offices through a security message.

A police officer among the victims
According to police sources, among the fatal victims is a city police officer who was working at the site as part of a security service. Several more people were injured, and authorities do not rule out that the number of fatalities may increase as the most serious cases are evaluated.
Tamura, the perpetrator of the shooting, previously worked as a security guard and more recently for a casino in Las Vegas. Authorities have not yet determined the motive for the attack, but described his behavior as that of a "maniac."
The former governor and current mayoral candidate of the city, Andrew Cuomo, stated on X: "Horrified by the shooting in Midtown. I'm grateful for the bravery of NYPD and first responders. My prayers are with the victims and their families."

Mamdani, missing in action
One of the most criticized statements was the one made by Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who reacted from abroad.
Mamdani is currently in Uganda, celebrating his wedding at a private luxury resort located in Buziga Hill, an exclusive area on the outskirts of Kampala, the capital of the African country.
From there, Mamdani expressed on his social media in a hypocritical manner: "My heart breaks to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown. I'm thinking of the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer who is in critical condition."
New York police, led by Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Eric Adams, held a press conference at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where some of the injured are being treated. Authorities continue to investigate the motives of the striker and provide assistance to the victims and their families.
