Based on the elimination of the disastrous policy of the Biden administration called 'Catch and Release,' the Trump administration did not carry out new releases

In September, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that no migrant releases were carried out by Border Patrol along the southwest border of the United States, marking the fifth consecutive month without this type of release.

This figure contrasts sharply with September 2024, when 9,144 releases were recorded. The Trump administration has celebrated this as a key victory in its immigration policy, emphasizing the elimination of the strategy known as "Catch and Release."

Under former Democratic President Joe Biden's administration, millions of migrants were irresponsibly released into the interior of the country after crossing the border illegally. Critics have argued that this policy created a network for the mass entry of migrants, which was supported by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that benefited financially through federal contracts.

Among these entities, Catholic Charities USA received nearly 800 million dollars in federal funding, according to a report published in 2024 by Alliance for a Safe Texas. This money was reportedly used to facilitate the transportation and accommodation of immigrants within U.S. territory.

The Trump administration keeps that this massive migratory flow was incentivized by lax policies and by an institutional support network that operated as an informal migrant relocation system. The NGOs involved not only facilitated the process, but also had direct economic interests, since their budgets largely depended on the number of migrants served.

In contrast to the previous administration, DHS also reported that Fiscal Year 2025 ended with the lowest number of illegal border crossings in the past 55 years. Fewer than 238,000 migrants crossed the southern border in the past 12 months, a historically low figure attributed to stricter and more efficient border control policies implemented under the Trump administration.

This reduction in illegal crossings and the elimination of the "Catch and Release" policy have been highlighted by officials as examples of a more efficient and secure immigration system, aligned with the objectives of deterring irregular migration.

The current government keeps that these measures not only improve national security, but also limit the exploitation of public resources and curb the economic incentive for NGOs to encourage irregular entry.
