Alpine would be one of the teams that stand out the most in decisive aspects of the new single-seaters
One week before the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Melbourne, Alpine appears well positioned within the pack that will try to trouble the main contenders. The team for which Franco Colapinto will race will have two key technical assets for the Australian Grand Prix: the latest version of the Mercedes engine and a single-seater that already complies with the new minimum weight limit.
On the mechanical side, the French team will debut in the first race the most recent version of the German power unit, just like McLaren and Williams. During preseason, only the works Mercedes team used the brand-new "M17 E Performance", while the customer teams ran with a previous version considered reliable enough to complete the testing program.

According to the specialized outlet The Race, the power units exceeded 20,000 kilometers (12,427.4 miles) of running between Barcelona and Bahrain, a figure that reinforces confidence in terms of durability. Mercedes's strategy was to reserve the final evolution for its own structure in testing and to focus on performance and reliability before distributing it to the rest of the customer teams.
The 2026 regulations leave no room for differences once the engine is homologated before March 1, since all teams that receive units from the same supplier must compete with identical specifications, with minimal exceptions linked to installation matters.
In that regard, Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal, admitted that there were differences between what was used in testing and what will arrive in Melbourne, although he avoided going into detail: "I do not want to elaborate too much on the specifications of the material. I think that it is part of the strategy implemented by HPP in terms of supply to customers and the works team". He added: "The important thing is that the appropriate specifications are available for the first race".
The other factor that fuels optimism at Alpine is the weight of the A526. With the 30-kilogram (66.1-pound) reduction in the minimum limit imposed by the FIA, several teams are still working to slim down their cars. In the category, it is estimated that every extra 10 kg (22 pounds) can cost nearly three tenths per lap, a significant difference both in qualifying and in race pace.

McLaren acknowledged that its model is overweight, while Williams had to deal with manufacturing setbacks and crash tests. In contrast, the single-seater that Colapinto and Pierre Gasly will share is believed to have managed to fall within the regulatory range from the outset, a relevant detail especially on street circuits such as Albert Park.
Meanwhile, with Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren shaping up as front-runners, Alpine will try to establish itself as the benchmark of the second group. With an updated engine and controlled weight, the French team heads to Australia with the tools to fight from the first weekend of the world championship.
