'Fremont': Valve is working on a new console to compete with PlayStation and Xbox

Fremont appeared on Geekbench and promises to revive the spirit of Steam Machines as a rival to the PS5 and Xbox

Valve is reportedly preparing a new desktop device that aims to revive the idea of the Steam Machine. Under the codename Fremont, the device appeared in performance tests and is positioned as an alternative to Sony and Microsoft.

The success of the Steam Deck demonstrated that the company has a place in the gaming hardware market. Now, with this project, Valve wants to expand its reach and strengthen SteamOS's presence in living rooms.

What is known about the Fremont project?

The device appeared in the Geekbench database, a performance testing tool. This confirms that its development is underway and that it is not a new version of the Steam Deck.

According to the records, Fremont would use a custom AMD chip. Its graphics power would be similar to a Radeon RX 7600 with RDNA 3 architecture. The processor would have 6 cores and 12 threads based on Zen 4.

Could it be a serious rival for PlayStation and Xbox?

Valve's return to the home console market could mean new competition for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Unlike the original Steam Machines, the ecosystem is now more favorable for this proposal.
