A German soldier was shot and wounded last Wednesday during a confusing shootout with police officers in the city of Erding, in the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany.
The incident took place during military training maneuvers, and according to initial reports, it appears to have resulted from a misunderstanding between the participants in the exercise and the local police forces.
According to the German newspaper Bild, the soldier, a member of the Military Police, sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was rushed to a hospital. At this time, his health status is unknown.

The same outlet reported that the soldiers were conducting exercises that included the involvement of police officers as part of the training. However, it is still unclear whether the Bavarian police officers who arrived at the scene were aware of these maneuvers, which may have triggered the shootout.
The German outlet Münchner Merkur added that there may be two people injured in the incident, although this information has not been officially confirmed. Police officers arrived at the site after receiving a report from neighbors who saw several men dressed in camouflage clothing and carrying long guns in a public area.
Upon arrival, the police officers apparently mistook the situation for a real threat and, amid the tension, an exchange of gunfire occurred. According to Bild, the soldiers were using blank ammunition for training purposes, while the officers fired live ammunition, which caused the injuries.

On its official X account, the Upper Bavaria Police reported that a "major police operation" was underway in Erding, with the participation of "numerous personnel on the ground and aerial support from a helicopter." The statement added that "there is and has been no danger to the population" and that traffic controls were established in the area to ensure safety.
The unusual incident caused a stir on social media, where many people wondered how a shootout could occur between forces of the State itself during a planned exercise.
