Google I/O 2025: AI, Android, and extended reality in an unprecedented event
The Google I/O 2025 event puts AI in the spotlight, with Android XR and key redesigns in its ecosystem
Artificial intelligence will be the main protagonist of the event starting this Tuesday in California. Additionally, key updates are expected on Android 16 and extended reality with innovative devices.
The annual Google I/O 2025 conference begins this May 20 from the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. With a strong focus on AI, the company will also showcase advancements in Android and its XR ecosystem.

What to expect from the main keynote?
This year, Google has set aside traditional Android announcements. Last week it held a separate event and now focuses all attention on Gemini, its artificial intelligence platform.
Strong updates are expected in AI models, new features, and subscription plans. Everything points to Google seeking to differentiate its AI in a market dominated by OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft.
What are the new plans for Gemini?
Leaks mention two new subscriptions: Premium Plus and Premium Pro. It is still unclear what they will offer compared to the current Gemini Advanced which costs 20 dollars per month.

Google is expected to explain how it integrates AI into its entire ecosystem. There will also be a focus on the arrival of Gemini to phones, computers, and other devices.
Project Astra: AI with human senses
One of the stars of the event will be Project Astra, a multimodal AI assistant that sees, hears, speaks, and understands. It can interpret what is happening around it in real time.

Google will use Gemini multimodal models to enable contextual conversations with this assistant. Its ability to analyze images and respond in voice transforms it into a new type of interaction.
Project Mariner: AI that navigates for you
Another major novelty will be Project Mariner, a system of AI agents that can move across the internet, fill out forms, click, and more.
TechCrunch detected references to this project in the AI Studio code. Everything indicates that Google will present concrete advances on these tools.

Android 16 and Material 3 Expressive: redesign with emotion
Android 16 will not be the protagonist, but it will still have its place. The big news is Material 3 Expressive, a visual redesign aimed at creating a more fluid and attractive experience.
- Natural animations with spring effect
- Blurs for depth
- Better hierarchized typography
- Striking components and color customization
This change will first arrive on Pixel in June, and then to the rest of the Android ecosystem.
Android XR: Google ventures into extended reality
Google will showcase advancements in Android XR, its platform for augmented and virtual reality. The event could include demonstrations of prototypes and new devices.

The Verge confirmed that XR will have a presence in the keynote, focusing on how Gemini integrates into these immersive environments.
Smart glasses and Project Moohan: what's coming
Leaks point to two important devices:
- Smart glasses: seen in recent presentations, they could be the next big launch alongside Samsung.
- Project Moohan: a more powerful mixed reality headset, also developed with Samsung, with a possible demo at the event.

Shahram Izadi, head of AR and XR at Google, already showcased the Project HAEAN glasses at TED 2025. They could hit the market in the third quarter.
Other expected announcements from Google I/O 2025
Besides the main topics, Google will bring other important news. Among the most notable:
- Wear OS 6: with Material 3 Expressive design and support for Gemini
- Gemini for Google TV and Android Auto: more intuitive hands-free assistance
- Mobile NotebookLM: already available on Play Store and App Store
