Israel's Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, was involved in a sharp diplomatic clash with the United Kingdom during the latest meeting of the United Nations Security Council, held in New York. In that context, the Israeli official mentioned Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands as an example in the international debate on territorial disputes and historical legitimacy.
During his address to the United Nations body, Sa’ar criticized the arguments put forward against the right of the Jewish people to live in territories that are central to their history and civilization.
In that framework, he stated: “How can Jews live in London, Paris, or New York, but not in the cradle of our civilization? Ancient Jerusalem, which you call East Jerusalem, Shiloh, Hebron, and Bet-El. Madam President, it's our country. They aren't 13,000 kilometers (8,078 miles) from our country, like the Falkland Islands, which Argentines call Islas Malvinas. It's a dispute that you haven't solved with Argentina to this day”.
The session was held under British presidency and was marked by questions raised by the United Kingdom's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Yvette Cooper, who criticized Israeli policies in the West Bank and questioned historical foundations linked to certain territories.

The latest controversy
This isn't the first time Sa’ar has mentioned the dispute over the Malvinas in public statements. Last December, the Foreign Minister addressed the controversy caused by the participation of the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum in a project linked to the South Atlantic. The clarification came after a formal protest lodged by Casa Rosada and was released through the social network X.
In that message, Sa’ar explained: “Recently, the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum announced that its British subsidiary will carry out activities in the South Atlantic Ocean, in an area whose sovereignty is disputed between Argentina and the United Kingdom”.

In that same statement, the Foreign Minister specified the scope of state participation and emphasized: “This is a private company and not an activity in which the Government of Israel is involved in any way”. He also added: “We regret the discomfort that this situation has caused in Argentina”.
In that context, the Israeli Foreign Minister reiterated his country's diplomatic position regarding the territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, noting the importance of reaching a solution through peaceful channels and dialogue. At the same time, he highlighted the strength of the bilateral relationship between Israel and Argentina, underscoring the close bond and the cooperation that exists under President Javier Milei's administration.
