Javier Milei met with Abelardo de la Espriella before his inauguration as president

The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, held a meeting with the elected president of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, in the city of Cali, ahead of the inauguration ceremony that will take place this Friday.

The meeting represents a central axis of the Argentine leader's visit and reflected the political alignment between both right-wing leaders at the beginning of a new stage in bilateral relations.

Milei's arrival in Colombian territory occurred as part of his participation in the presidential inauguration that will take place at the Arena USC of the Universidad Santiago de Cali, where De la Espriella will formally assume office. The presence of the Argentine head of state stands out among the international figures who will attend the event.

The meeting between Milei and the elected president takes place in a context of ideological affinity and expectations for a new diplomatic scenario between Buenos Aires and Bogotá. The Argentine leader had already confirmed days earlier his attendance at the transfer of command, in a strong political backing for the new Colombian government.

Before arriving in Colombia, Milei developed an international agenda that included a stop in Quito, where he met with the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa. After that activity, the leader continued his tour heading to Cali to participate in the change of command.

De la Espriella accessed the presidency through his movement Defensores de la Patria, after winning a runoff election against leftist senator Iván Cepeda, succeeding the communist Gustavo Petro. His rise to power marks a historic shift in the political orientation of the country.

The Government of Abelardo

The new Colombian government is characterized by a hardline approach to security and a series of structural reforms of the State.

Among the main measures announced is the total rejection of peace negotiations with terrorist and criminal groups, along with the implementation of bombings of drug traffickers' camps, the spraying of coca crops, and the construction of mega-prisons.

In parallel, De la Espriella is also promoting a program for reducing the size of the State, with the promise to cut the state apparatus by 40%, accompanied by a tax reduction and the closure of various government agencies.

In this context, the meeting with Milei and the Argentine presence at the inauguration ceremony consolidate a political bond that projects onto the regional agenda, with agreements on economic and security matters.
