The Left and Workers' Front - Unity (FIT-U) suffered a significant setback in the legislative elections in Buenos Aires province, as it failed to surpass the 8.33% threshold in key municipalities of Greater Buenos Aires such as La Matanza, Merlo, and José C. Paz.
This result means that, starting in December, the political force will be left without representation in the deliberative councils of those districts.
Nicolas del Caño - Ex Miembro de la Cámara de Diputados de Argentina.
In total, the left-wing coalition obtained 353,287 votes across the province, falling to fourth place and losing more than 245,000 votes compared to 2021.
In that election, FIT-U had managed to install six councilors in Greater Buenos Aires municipalities, including Olga Yolanda Ortigoza and Ana IreneParedes Landmanin La Matanza; Valeria Bibiano and Anabela Colliin José C. Paz; and Romina Ruocco and Susana Verónin Merlo.
This year's decline prevents them from renewing those seats. In the local results, the left reached5.74% in José C. Paz, 4.15% in La Matanza, and 6.95% in Merlo, falling short of the required electoral threshold.
At the provincial level, FIT-U obtained 5.66% in the Third Electoral Section, barely surpassing the required 5.35%. This allowed Nicolás del Cañoand Mónica Schlotthauer to be elected as provincial deputies, although the vote count was lower than in 2021, when the force gathered 80,000 more votes.
Romina Del Plá - Ex Miembro de la Cámara de Diputados de Argentina.
This performance represents an adverse scenario for FIT-U ahead of the October general elections, in which it will have to defend two seats in the National Congress currently held by Nicolás del Caño and Romina del Plá.
According to the coalition, Del Caño will once again be a candidate for deputy for Buenos Aires province.
The October elections will also mark the first implementation in the country of the Single Paper Ballot (BUP) for legislative offices, an institutional change that will be applied nationwide.
