Matías Suárez and his surprising confession about River: 'If I had known Gallardo was coming back...'
The forward from Córdoba spoke about his departure from Millonario and strongly criticized Martín Demichelis
Currently in Chile, Matías Suárez spoke again about his departure and revealed an unexpected fact related to Marcelo Gallardo and his poor relationship with Martín Demichelis.
"If I had known Gallardo was coming back, I would have stayed," stated the 37-year-old forward in an interview with TNT Sports. El Muñeco returned to the club six months after Suárez's departure. In January 2024, already as a free agent, the Cordoban returned to Belgrano, where he played for one season.

During his last year at River, and whenever he was physically fit, Martín Demichelis considered him an important piece. For this reason, Suárez admitted that it was not easy to make the decision to leave. "They sent me the contract renewal offer three times, and on the last day I replied that I was not going to continue," he recounted. He added: "I left happy, with knee discomfort, but content because I gave everything for the jersey."
However, as happened with several members of that squad, there was an episode that marked a turning point: Demichelis's off-the-record comments with journalists. "It was very unpleasant, hard to believe considering how we had been conducting ourselves, trying to be as honest as possible with the group and not causing trouble outside. The group was not like that, it was poorly received as it would be in any job, with any group," said the former Millonario forward firmly.

Meanwhile, he highlighted the demands of the Núñez club. "At River, you have to know that if you do not perform day in and day out, if you are not at 100%, the criticism is harsh. You have to be mentally prepared for when things do not go well; there are players with a lot of talent who have played for River and have struggled to handle it," Suárez commented.
Matías Suárez's numbers at River
The current Unión Española player played 133 matches wearing River's jersey, in which he scored 40 goals and provided 30 assists over five years. In addition, he won six titles: two Liga Profesional, one Copa Argentina, one Supercopa Argentina, one Trofeo de Campeones, and one Recopa Sudamericana.
