The transfer market is also a time for farewells. In the midst of negotiations and choices of new destinations, Matías Suárez chose to close his chapter as a professional player. At 37 years old, the forward decided to retire definitively from the sport.

The information was confirmed by journalist Germán García Grova, who indicated that despite having offers to continue his career, Suárez understood that his cycle as a player was complete. His last stint was with Unión Española, a club with which he finished his contract in mid-2025 and that ended up marking the close of his journey on the field.

Since then, the striker had remained a free agent. During that period he maintained sporadic activity, even taking part in the Copa Potrero, while he evaluated the possibility of extending his career a little longer.

In recent weeks there were talks with Racing de Córdoba, with the intention of playing again in his home province. However, the negotiations did not move forward and the club, which will face the next Primera Nacional season with promotion ambitions, did not reach an agreement with the player.

Thus, Suárez puts a final full stop to a distinguished career that included spells at Belgrano, Anderlecht, River and Unión Española. Meanwhile, he had his place in the Argentina National Team, where he played several matches and logged minutes in the 2019 Copa América, closing a career marked by his talent and quality.

Matías Suárez's numbers in his career

The native of La Falda began his career at Belgrano, a club in which he had three spells (2006-2008; 2016-2019 and 2024-2025). Adding his different stints with the Pirata, he accumulated 114 matches, in which he scored 13 goals and provided 13 assists and did not record any titles.

His first destination outside the Córdoba team was Anderlecht in Belgium, the team where he played the largest number of matches: 241. From his arrival in 2008 until his departure in 2016 to return to the Celeste, Suárez recorded 68 goals and 59 assists. Meanwhile, he won many domestic titles (4 Belgian leagues and 4 Super Cups) and was named the league's best player in 2012.

After a notable return to Belgrano, in 2019 River set its sights on him and put nearly 3 million dollars on the table for 50% of his transfer. In his 5 years with the Núñez club, the forward contributed 40 goals and delivered 30 assists. In addition, with the Millonario he celebrated titles on multiple occasions: 2019 Recopa Sudamericana, 2021 and 2023 Liga Profesional, 2019 Copa Argentina, 2019/20 Supercopa Argentina and 2021 and 2023 Trofeo de Campeones.
