The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, remembered the victims of the attacks on September 11, 2001 this Friday and drew a parallel with the attack carried out by Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023.
In a message released on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the attacks in the United States, Netanyahu stated that both 9/11 and October 7 represented attacks against civilians and described both episodes as expressions of “pure evil”. The leader asserted that Israel and the United States share an experience in facing terrorism and reaffirmed the alliance between the two countries.
Commemoration in New York for the victims of the September 11 attack
“On September 11, the United States was struck by pure evil. On October 7, Israel was once again struck by it,” Netanyahu stated. The Prime Minister added that there is no “yes, but” when it comes to terrorism and maintained that his country and its allies must not surrender to terrorist organizations.
The 9/11 attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities after members of Al Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two of the aircraft crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, a third into the Pentagon, and the fourth fell in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control of the plane. The United States commemorates this Friday the 25th anniversary of those attacks.
Netanyahu linked that memory to the attack on October 7, 2023, when members of Hamas entered Israeli territory from Gaza and killed around 1,200 people, in addition to taking approximately 250 hostages. The attack triggered the war in Gaza and a regional escalation that later involved other actors and scenarios.

The comparison made by Netanyahu once again places terrorism at the center of the debate on the security of Western democracies. For the Israeli Prime Minister, the remembrance of 9/11 and October 7 also serves as an argument to maintain strategic cooperation between Israel and the United States against terrorist organizations.
25 years after the attacks that transformed international politics, Netanyahu used the commemoration to assert a position of firmness against terrorism and stated that Israel, just like the United States after 9/11, “will never surrender to evil”.
