Nicolas Cage surprises as Saint Joseph in The Carpenter’s Son, the new biblical horror film.

Lofty Nathan's film reveals a disturbing account of Jesus' childhood with Nicolas Cage, Noah Jupe, and FKA twigs in the leading roles

Nicolas Cage once again captures the public's attention with The Carpenter's Son, in which he plays Saint Joseph in a story that combines family drama, religion, and horror.

Directed by Lofty Nathan, the film is inspired by the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas and reimagines Jesus' childhood with a disturbing tone. The film will premiere in the United States this spring and is already generating anticipation following the release of its first trailer.

An unprecedented reinterpretation of Jesus' childhood

The trailer features Noah Jupe as a young, tormented Jesus, whose powers and doubts create tension with his adoptive father.

The story unfolds under Roman occupation, portraying the family as a microcosm in constant conflict between faith and fear. The visual atmosphere reinforces the disturbing nature of the story: close-up shots, a shroud covering the child, and harrowing screams set the tone of the film.

Nicolas Cage, key in the casting decision

Nicolas Cage's involvement not only adds dramatic weight but was also decisive in the choice of the lead actor. After seeing Noah Jupe in Honey Boy, Cage personally suggested him to play Jesus.

Alongside them, FKA twigs brings to life a Virgin Mary marked by pain, completing a highly magnetic acting trio.

Lofty Nathan's contribution and the apocryphal perspective

The director draws from a rarely explored source in cinema: the apocryphal gospels. In doing so, he introduces extracanonical episodes that enhance the mysterious dimension of the story.

His vision combines elements of psychological thriller with an intimate focus on the family of Nazareth, offering an experience that goes beyond the classic  biblical narrative.

Between the sacred and the profane: horror as a means of exploration

The film joins the trend in contemporary cinema of reinterpreting religious myths through suspense.  The Carpenter's Son offers a perspective that challenges the boundaries between faith and paranoia, placing the viewer in an ambiguous space where the divine coexists with the terrifying.

Although the international release date and final runtime are still unknown,  the secrecy surrounding the project fuels the mystery and positions it as one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
