The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, warned this Friday that any attack or direct threat against Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave located between Poland and Lithuania, could trigger an unprecedented military escalation and lead to a large-scale armed conflict in Europe. The statements were made during a special year-end press conference held in Moscow.
Putin expressed his hope that no country will attempt to attack the region, but he made it clear that Russia would respond forcefully to any hostile action. "I hope that will not happen. But if threats of this kind are created against us, we will destroy them. Everyone must understand that actions like this will lead to an escalation of the conflict never seen before," he stated.
The head of state emphasized that an attack against Kaliningrad would raise the level of confrontation to "a completely different dimension", expanding the conflict until it becomes a full-scale war. "Everyone must be aware of this," he added, in one of the Kremlin's most severe warnings in recent months.
Kaliningrad, a strategically key region in the Baltic Sea, has gained relevance in the context of the deterioration of relations between Russia and the West, especially after the start of the war in Ukraine. In that scenario, Putin accused several European leaders of fueling a narrative of confrontation with Moscow for domestic political reasons.

According to the Russian president, some European leaders are "deliberately creating the image of Russia as an enemy" to cover up their own mistakes and divert attention from their political and economic failures. "Talking about a war with Russia serves to conceal their mistakes and justify failed decisions," he maintained.
Putin described the behavior of certain European leaders as "aggressive and unprofessional" and mentioned as an example recent statements by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Although he praised Rutte as an "intelligent and efficient" official whom he knows personally, he harshly criticized his rhetoric. "When he talks about a war with Russia, I want to ask him: what nonsense is he talking about?" he stated.
