Argentinian journalism is in mourning following the confirmation of the passing of Roberto García, an undisputed figure in political and economic analysis, who left this world at the age of 81. With an uninterrupted career spanning more than six decades, García became a beacon of clarity in the face of power movements, forging his reputation in iconic media outlets such as Primera Plana, La Opinión, Ámbito Financiero, and Canal 26.

His influence in shaping national critical thought was decisive, especially during his extensive tenure as editorial director of Ámbito Financiero from 1983 to 2008.

In recent years, his commitment to the cultural battle led him to regain notable prominence by regularly inviting Javier Milei to his program on Canal 26, allowing the ideas that now guide the Government to reach every corner of the country.

The sad news moved public opinion on the morning of June 20, 2026. Exactly “at 8:56, the usual programming of Canal 26's news broadcast was interrupted to announce the news”. The station highlighted that, “with his unique style, his sources, his experience, and his ability to interpret reality, he continued to practice journalism with the same passion as in his beginnings”.

His legacy remained relevant until his last days through his program La Mirada, co-hosted with his son Javier García, to whom he passed on not only the craft but also his fervor for Racing Club.

Throughout his brilliant career, Roberto García was honored multiple times with the Konex Award and was part of the National Academy of Journalism, honors that reflect his status as one of the “most recognized voices in Argentinian journalism”.

The impact of his passing generated a wave of condolences from all sectors: the Secretary of Tourism, Daniel Scioli, highlighted his professional qualities; journalist Liliana Franco remembered him as her “mentor” and lamented that with him, “a part of journalism” was lost; while Ceferino Reato emphasized his ability to convey information with “distance, irony, and depth”. For his part, historian Juan Bautista “Tata” Yofre emotionally stated that the analyst “had not passed through this earth in vain”.

Canal 26 bid farewell to its great figure with a plaque in black and white and the inscription “Roberto García 1945-2026″, extending its condolences to his family and assuring that “his legacy will remain in every analysis, in every interview, and in every generation of journalists who learned from his work”. At a time when the Nation seeks to regain its greatness under the mandate of freedom, the absence of a mind as sharp and committed as García's will be strongly felt in the national public debate.
