The Commander-in-Chief of the Romanian Army, Gheorghe Vlad, stated in an interview that his country is willing to provide military assistance to Moldova in the event of aggression by Russia, reaffirming the strategic commitment between both nations.
"Romania remains a committed ally of Moldova. We share a strategic partnership and we will undoubtedly come to its aid if it faces an attack," General Vlad said. The statement underscores the growing concern in the region over the Russian military presence in Transnistria and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The general emphasized that Romania already supports Moldova in strengthening its defense capabilities through numerous joint programs, and recalled that Romanian legislation obliges the country to provide assistance to its citizens abroad in times of war. "Romania has political, military, and other tools to support Moldova, and especially Romanian citizens living there," Vlad noted.
It is worth noting that a large part of the Moldovan population holds dual citizenship, both Moldovan and Romanian, which reinforces the connection between the two countries and could increase the degree of Romanian involvement in the event of conflict.

The possibilities of a Russian attack on Moldova
Although Gheorghe Vlad considers a direct attack by Russia against Romania or any other NATO country unlikely, he did not completely rule out the possibility. "According to our analysis, a Russian attack on a NATO country is unlikely, but not impossible. As military personnel, we can't rule out any scenario," the general explained, noting that Russia has been known for its "false flag" operations and for expanding its hybrid warfare as methods of pressure and destabilization.
Moscow's main objective, according to Vlad, remains the destruction of Ukraine as an independent state, but its regional influence extends beyond the Ukrainian front.
