A young woman lost her life last Friday after undergoing an abortion in a clandestine clinic in the Fovissste neighborhood, in San Luis Potosí. The State Attorney General's Office confirmed that the place was not authorized to operate.

According to prosecutor Manuela García Cázares, the victim was more than 12 weeks pregnant, a stage that requires strict specialized medical attention. However, the doctor responsible for the procedure fled the scene.

The autopsy revealed that there were still remnants of the fetus and placenta inside the uterus, which would have caused a fatal complication.

The case is already in the hands of justice; the assistant was prosecuted this Monday, while the doctor remains at large.

Legal abortion? A tragedy that shows another reality

Although abortion was legalized in San Luis Potosí more than five months ago, this tragedy highlights that legalizing doesn't necessarily mean protecting. Far from preventing deaths, the normalization of abortion has created a false sense of security that drives many women to clandestine clinics.

Meanwhile, the absence of policies that promote life and support women in vulnerable situations, and the inherent danger of turning abortion into a "routine" solution.

Abortion is not a care policy. It doesn't save lives; rather, it ends them. And in this case, it took two.

Since 2023, 19 of the 32 states in the Mexican republic have decriminalized abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The last state to decriminalize abortion was Chiapas, in the south of the country.

Instead of facilitating abortion, the State should offer true life options and appropriate support to new mothers.
