Spyro, the iconic purple dragon that marked a generation of gamers in the 90s, is ready for an epic comeback with Spyro: A Realm Beyond. The title was revealed during the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase and promises to expand the classic action and platforming formula to new heights.

Developed by Toys for Bob, the studio responsible for the remastered Reignited trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4, the game aims to update the experience while keeping the original character's fluidity and charm intact. After nearly 20 years without a main installment, fans will be able to explore once again as the brave dragon.

The creators met with the press to share details about the project. According to studio head Paul Yan, the team focused on what makes Spyro unique: that feeling of fluid movement and the constant interaction with the environment that generates an almost zen momentum.

Exploration on land and in the air

This new installment takes that idea to another dimension by combining land exploration with free flight. The worlds will be more detailed and expansive, allowing for smooth transitions between running, jumping, and soaring through the skies. Yan emphasized that enabling this freedom creates a cascade of possibilities that shape the entire level design.

The game aims to be an ideal entry point for new players, but it also respects the legacy for those who grew up with the original adventures. In that sense, Tom Kenny, the original voice of Spyro, returns to bring the same energy and personality that captivated so many.

Toys for Bob has accumulated experience working on remasters and supporting other major projects like Overwatch 2 and Call of Duty following the merger of Activision Blizzard with Microsoft. Now, the studio eagerly returns to create its own game, focusing on what it truly means to play as a dragon.

A worthy successor for fans and newcomers

The developers emphasized that the biggest challenge was balancing nostalgia with innovation. The gameplay emphasizes open exploration and combat against new enemies, all within environments that take advantage of modern console capabilities.

While there are still few details about the complete story, it is clear that the premise revolves around expanding Spyro's powers and his role as an experienced explorer. The trailer provided just a glimpse, but it generated a lot of excitement among the showcase attendees.

This installment represents an opportunity for the purple dragon to return to the spotlight. With mechanics that combine the best of the classics and new ideas, Spyro: A Realm Beyond has everything to satisfy both veterans and those discovering the series now.

The title will be released in spring 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
