After an excellent Supreme Court ruling, President Trump's administration will be able to deport more than 300,000 illegal immigrants

The United States Supreme Court authorized President Donald Trump's administration on Friday to eliminate temporary protections against deportation for more than 300,000 Venezuelan migrants.
The decision overturns a ruling by federal district judge Edward Chen, who was appointed during Obama's term. In September, that judge had ruled that Trump acted improperly by ending the 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans ahead of schedule.
In a split vote, left-leaning justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson opposed the conservative majority. The Court's ruling was issued unsigned and reaffirmed a previous decision by the same court made in May, when an earlier order by Judge Chen that kept protections for Venezuelan immigrants in effect was also suspended.

The Court repeats the same formula
"The same result we reached in May is appropriate here," the high court wrote. TPS is a federal program that, since the 1990s, has provided temporary relief to migrants from countries affected by armed conflicts, natural disasters, or other extraordinary crises. It allows beneficiaries to remain legally in the US and obtain work permits.
During his presidency, Trump sought to eliminate multiple immigration protections implemented by previous Democratic administrations, including TPS granted to citizens of several nations, among them Venezuela. In fact, this legal mechanism had already been canceled by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
In her dissenting vote, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson argued that the law governing TPS clearly states that a country's designation must remain in effect until its last approved extension expires. In this case, that date was October 2026, before Noem decided to interrupt it.
Jackson described the court's decision as a "grave misuse of the emergency docket" and accused the conservative majority of prioritizing unchecked executive power over the stability needs of thousands of families who had received promises from the US government.
