The summit to be held in Hungary between President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, has led the White House to continue betting on peace and make the decision not to provide Ukraine with US-made Tomahawk missiles.
Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived in Washington on Friday to meet with Trump and discuss the new weapons his army intends to acquire to continue fighting against Russia. Previously, the US president had communicated with Putin and both had agreed to meet soon in Budapest to finalize details on ending the war.
Trump emphasized the need to reach an agreement—like the one he signed in the Middle East—that would end the war and be "lasting." "The Middle East was a much more complicated situation," the president noted, referring to the peace agreement he made between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas."

Trump states that the US "needs the Tomahawks"
"You know, we had 59 countries involved, and each one of them agreed. And it's, you know, it's something unbelievable. Most people didn't think that was feasible. This is going to be something that I really think is going to get done. Yesterday I had a very good talk with President Putin. I think he wants to do it," the Republican said.
"We need the Tomahawks, we need many other weapons that we're sending to Ukraine," Trump said. "One of the reasons why we want to end this war is exactly that. It's not easy for us to give... you're talking about a massive number of very powerful weapons, so that's one of the things we'll talk about. I hope they don't need them. Hopefully we can end the war without thinking about the Tomahawks. I think we're pretty close to that."
At another point in the meeting, the Ukrainian president was asked to distinguish the biggest difference in diplomacy between Trump and former President Joe Biden. Zelensky replied that his US counterpart "now has a great opportunity to end the war," while the Republican gave a simpler answer: "I'd say the biggest difference is that one is extremely competent and the other is grossly incompetent."
