The president described Canada's move as interference in North American politics and declared all trade negotiations concluded
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, declared all trade negotiations with Canada over on Thursday after the Ontario government played dirty and launched an advertising campaign against the White House's tariff policy.
This campaign was broadcast in the US during a baseball game and cost 75 million dollars. The campaign maliciously edits parts of a speech given by former president Ronald Reagan to make the audience believe that the late Republican rejected tariffs as a trade policy.
The idea for this advertisement came from Ontario's premier, the center-left politician Doug Ford, and his provincial administration. Trump replied to this move by accusing the neighboring country of trying to interfere with US policy and ended talks on a new trade agreement.

"The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an ad, which is FALSE, with Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
"Tariffs are very important for the national security and economy of the United States. Based on this outrageous behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby terminated," summarized the US president.
Trump's post was followed by a statement from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, which threatened Ontario's premier with future legal action. "The ad misrepresents the presidential radio address, and the Ontario government neither sought nor received permission to use and edit the remarks," the foundation said. "We encourage you to watch the unedited video of President Reagan on our YouTube channel."
Immediately after these warnings, Ford said he would pause his advertising campaign starting Monday "so that trade talks can resume". However, his team plans to continue airing the ad during the first two games of the World Series that will take place next weekend.
