The President of the United States, Donald Trump, attended a peace ceremony on Sunday to cement the ceasefire that his administration helped achieve between Cambodia and Thailand. The agreement ended a five-day conflict that took place in July and claimed the lives of dozens of people.
The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, and the Thai Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, joined Trump in the Malaysian city of Kuala Lumpur to formalize the peace agreement reached a few months ago. "On behalf of the United States, I'm proud to help solve this conflict and forge a future for the region," Trump stated. "We may have saved millions of lives in this peace agreement," he added.
The terms of the ceasefire accepted by the parties include the provision that Thailand release 18 Cambodian soldiers detained during the conflict. Both countries will withdraw heavy weapons from the border they share, and officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will oversee the cessation of hostilities.

Awaiting the US-China summit
After the end of the military conflict was made official, it was time for commercial understandings. Trump signed an agreement with Malaysia on critical minerals that establishes that the Asian country can't impose quotas on critical minerals or rare earth elements destined for the United States, a key issue for the White House, which seeks to reduce Chinese influence in its country.
From the Cambodian side, Manet praised Trump's involvement in the ceasefire negotiations. "Reflecting the gratitude of the Cambodian people, I have nominated President Donald J. Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. He saved lives," the prime minister summarized.
Trump's stop in Malaysia is marked as the beginning of a tour of the Asian continent that will last almost an entire week. The president is expected to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in a few days, in what will be a high-impact meeting between the two superpower leaders.
The Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, said a few hours ago that US and Chinese negotiators had reached a preliminary agreement ahead of the summit between Trump and Xi. "I think we've reached a very substantial framework that will prevent high tariffs and will allow us to discuss many other things with the Chinese," the financier considered.
