The president held an event at the White House together with the families who lost a loved one at the hands of illegal immigrants

President Donald Trump declared February 22 as "Angel Families Day" and paid tribute this Monday to the families who lost their loved ones at the hands of criminals who were in the United States illegally.
The presidential declaration honors two survivors and 62 people who were killed by illegal immigrants, including the young nursing student Laken Riley, who was attacked and killed on the campus of the University of Georgia. Trump chose the date of February 22 because Riley was brutally murdered on that day in 2024.
"It will be the first event of its kind to honor the "angel families" who have lost loved ones who were killed by foreign criminals in the country illegally," a White House official declared. The event to honor the memory of Riley and other victims takes place one day before Trump delivers his State of the Union address on Tuesday night.

The Laken Riley case
When referring to this crime, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that "the first law that President Trump enacted was the Laken Riley Act, in order to prevent senseless tragedies like these from happening again and to keep innocent American citizens safe," adding that "the president and our nation will join the Angel Families to honor the memory of these extraordinary men and women."
The young student was killed by José Antonio Ibarra, an undocumented Venezuelan who is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after he was unanimously convicted by a jury at the end of 2024.
"Prosecutors argued at his murder trial that Riley died during a violent struggle with Ibarra. A medical examiner testified that her striker struck the nursing student's head with a rock and inflicted multiple wounds to her head, neck, torso, and limbs while she desperately tried to defend herself," the forensic report stated.
This crime and others committed by illegal immigrants are due to the disastrous border policies of former Democratic President Joe Biden, which wreaked havoc in American cities. For this reason, Trump has worked to ensure justice for the families who were victims of this type of crime.
