The U.S. president once again backed the Argentine leader in Washington

From Washington, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, renewed his political support for Javier Milei during the first session of the Peace Council, the international forum that seeks to define a roadmap for the reconstruction of Gaza.
In the middle of his address, Trump surprised the audience by asking in a relaxed tone where the Argentine president was. Immediately afterward, he recalled that he had supported him publicly and maintained that, although he doesn't usually back candidates, he does so when someone inspires confidence in him. In that context, he emphasized that Milei, according to his words, had been lagging in the polls before the 2025 legislative elections and ended up prevailing by a wide margin.

The head of the White House also mentioned the prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, a strategic ally in Eastern Europe. Both leaders were seated together by protocol during the session. Trump stressed that his political support also extended to Orbán, who will face elections in the coming months.
Milei's presence at the Peace Council consolidates his position as one of Washington's main strategic partners in Latin America. Argentina, together with El Salvador and Paraguay, is one of the few countries in the region that are part of this new multilateral framework promoted by the Republican administration.
The forum was initially conceived to address the reconstruction of Gaza, but Trump intends to broaden its geopolitical scope. In the opening session, the U.S. president announced that several countries — including Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, and Kuwait — had committed more than 7 billion dollars in public contributions.

Argentina, meanwhile, doesn't plan to make a monetary contribution and Trump has exempted it from doing so. However, it is expected that it may contribute with expertise in peace operations and assistance in conflict contexts. The Argentine delegation was headed by Milei, accompanied by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, while the general secretary of the Presidency, Karina Milei, remained in Buenos Aires.
Trump's public gesture did not go unnoticed on the international stage: in a forum where several powers chose not to participate, the explicit support for the Argentine president reinforces the political alignment between Buenos Aires and Washington and projects Argentina as an actor aligned with the Western agenda.
