LIVE: United States destroys Iran's three nuclear sites
In recent hours, Donald Trump's administration announced that it had carried out an attack on three of Iran's largest nuclear facilities
President Donald Trump surprised the international community by launching an airstrike against three nuclear facilities in Iran, after having given public signals that military action was not imminent.
Only 48 hours earlier, Trump stated that he was still evaluating his options and would make a decision "in the next two weeks", which created the impression that diplomacy was being given space, especially after the recent Israeli attacks against Iran.
The offensive included the use of B-2 stealth bombers, which secretly took off from Missouri on Saturday. These aircraft, unique in their class for their ability to carry deep-penetration bombs of up to 13,600 kilograms (29,983 pounds), are designed to strike deeply buried targets. It was thought that they would not reach Iran until Sunday, which increased the surprise effect of the bombing.
Trump's decision appears to have been calculated to disorient both Tehran and the international community, using public statements as a distraction strategy.
