Trump prioritizes the fight against transnational crime and the control of the southern border
In a new press conference from the White House, Presidential spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed that Donald Trump's administration keeps the fight against transnational organized crime and the strengthening of border control as a priority, with a special focus on cooperation with Mexico.
When asked about the repression of journalists and young people in Mexico, Leavitt emphasized that, despite the internal problems of the neighboring country, the bilateral relationship is going through a key moment for regional security.
The spokesperson stated that Sheinbaum's administration has shown an "extremely cooperative" stance in sensitive areas:
Border security
Migratory control on the southern border
Joint actions against the cartels
Information exchange
The White House considers that these mechanisms have enabled "historic progress" in the relationship with Mexico and lay the groundwork for scaling up measures against transnational crime.
Trump evaluates new actions against the cartels
When asked whether there could be a specific strategy toward Mexico similar to the recent plan directed at Venezuela, Leavitt was categorical: President Trump is evaluating new actions to confront the cartels that currently control territories and influence governments in the region.

The objective is to move toward a continental strategy against transnational criminal organizations, combining diplomatic pressure, military action, intelligence cooperation, and reinforced border security measures.
The spokesperson stressed that the president considers this fight a top political promise. The U.S. administration keeps that the southern border continues to be a critical point for:
Drug trafficking
Human trafficking
The entry of criminal organizations
The flow of illegal migration encouraged by criminal networks
In this context, Washington highlighted the joint work with Mexico to close illegal routes, increase patrols, reinforce controls at hot spots, and stop cartel operations linked to drug trafficking and human smuggling.
Negre also raised the issue of the murder of more than 150 journalists in Mexico. Leavitt agreed that there is "little international coverage" on the subject and stated that the administration strongly condemns these crimes.

The political signal is clear: The United States is toughening its strategy against continental organized crime and consolidating Mexico as a key operational partner.
With an agenda focused on secure borders, joint actions against the cartels, and new measures under evaluation, the Trump administration seeks to deepen a regional security policy that involves not only Mexico, but the entire hemisphere.
