The first six F-16AM/BM fighter jets acquired by Argentina from Denmark arrived this Friday at the Área Material Río Cuarto in Córdoba, in what represents the largest modernization of the country's combat aviation in more than three decades.
The incorporation of these aircraft, modernized under the MLU (Mid-Life Update) program, marks a new era for the Air Force, which will regain the supersonic interception capability lost after the retirement of the Mirage.
With a maximum speed exceeding 2,100 km/h (1,304 mph), a Pratt & Whitney F100 engine capable of generating more than ten tons of thrust and an architecture designed to withstand 9 G maneuvers, the F-16s are integrated as the most advanced weapons system in service in Argentina.

The F-16, designed by General Dynamics and now produced by Lockheed Martin, is one of the most widely used multirole fighters in the world and forms the backbone of more than 25 air forces. Its international success is explained by the combination of lightness, maneuverability, mechanical reliability, and operational flexibility for interception, air-to-ground attack, escort, maritime patrol, and reconnaissance missions.
The aircraft acquired by Argentina come from Block 10/15, but underwent the extensive European MLU program, which deeply renewed the avionics, navigation systems, mission computer, compatibility with guided weaponry, and radar.
This update, developed in Europe since the 1990s, was created to extend the F-16's service life in the absence of a direct successor and to keep it at the level of current combat standards.
One of the most relevant improvements for the Argentine Air Force is the incorporation of the Link 16 data link system, never before available in a national fighter jet.

This technology allows real-time information sharing between aircraft, radars, and command centers, making the F-16 an essential node within modern defense networks. This operational leap implies superior coordination in surveillance, interception, and combat missions.
The AN/APG-66(V)2 radar, included in the MLU package, offers a much greater detection range, improved air-to-ground modes, better multi-target tracking capabilities, and increased resistance to electronic interference.
In addition, it is compatible with advanced weaponry such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, the latter considered among the most effective BVR (beyond visual range) missiles in the world. It can also employ laser- or GPS-guided bombs, providing precision strike capability.

Structurally, the aircraft underwent the PACER SLIP program, which examines and reinforces the airframe to ensure at least 5,000 additional flight hours. This process includes the inspection and repair of bulkheads subjected to accumulated stress during years of service, ensuring a total service life of approximately more than 30 years.
The cockpit also received a complete modernization. The F-16s that underwent the MLU incorporated a high angular capacity HUD, color multifunction displays, an updated display generator, and lighting compatible with night vision goggles.
The layout is similar to that of the modern F-16C Block 40/50, which improves pilot situational awareness and facilitates operation in demanding tactical environments. In addition, the new side stick and throttle controls allow HOTAS-type handling, an essential standard in contemporary combat aviation.

It is expected that the F-16s will replace the A-4AR Fightinghawk, aircraft that, after more than two decades of service, already present certain limitations. With the new weapons systems, Argentina regains deterrence and air surveillance capability and aligns itself with modern Western interoperability standards.
The acquisition also represents an improvement in the ability to integrate with other regional actors and international allies. Thanks to Link 16, the updated radar, and the ability to employ advanced guided weaponry, the F-16s position the Argentine Air Force within a much more sophisticated and coordinated defense system.
With these additions, Argentina not only regains functions it had lost, but enters a new technological level that substantially expands its ability to react, control, and defend its airspace. The F-16AM/BM MLU thus represents the greatest operational leap for Argentine military aviation since the 1980s.
