At 36 years old, Wojciech Szczesny is going through an unexpected moment in his career. After announcing his retirement from professional football in 2024 to settle in Marbella, the call from Barcelona completely changed his plans. What initially seemed like a temporary addition turned into a continuation with the Catalan team, where he will remain at least until mid-2027.

In an interview with The Athletic, the goalkeeper surprised by openly referring to his relationship with tobacco, a topic that had already generated a stir during the celebrations of the LaLiga title.

During the celebration of the Spanish championship, Szczesny was photographed using a vape and sharing cigarettes with other members of the squad, images that quickly went viral and provoked criticism on social media and sports media.

Wojciech Szczesny on his problem with tobacco: “It’s an addiction that I’m not even willing to fight against”

"Maybe it's not the most professional thing in the world, but that's how I am. People know I have an addiction that I can't shake off. I think even that feels authentic to them, because many players have certain addictions (nicotine, alcohol, gambling...)," he stated.

When asked about that episode, the goalkeeper admitted that smoking is part of an addiction he has not managed to overcome and explained that he never tried to hide it.

"I'm pretty open about it. It's an addiction that I'm not even willing to fight against. I accept it, and maybe that's what people perceive as something authentic," he expressed.

The former Juventus goalkeeper made it clear that he is aware that his behavior may be questioned, although he maintained that he does not seek to become a role model off the field.

Additionally, he acknowledged that he understands the risks associated with tobacco consumption, but stated that, for now, he has no intention of starting a process to quit the habit. As he explained, he prefers to accept that reality rather than hide it, an attitude he considers consistent with his way of being.
