Assembly member Cristina Jácome, from the Revolución Ciudadana movement, initiated an oversight process due to the severe shortage of medicines in public hospitals. In her speech, she detailed the critical situation in the country's health centers and reported the lack of professionals and adequate infrastructure.
Jácome sent seven requests for information to the Minister of Health, Juan Bernardo Sánchez, to clarify irregularities in budget execution, vaccine management, and payments to external providers. According to the IDB, Ecuador is among the countries with the worst health efficiency, ranking 54th out of 71.
During a visit to the Guayaquil Specialty Hospital, the legislator warned of a progressive deterioration in services, stating that the neglect is not exclusive to the current government. Citizen complaints about lack of timely care and inactive operating rooms prompted the oversight process from the Health Commission.
