The U.S. Embassy in London issued a security alert aimed at American citizens in the United Kingdom, urging them to exercise extreme caution in public spaces following the decision of the British government to raise the level of domestic terrorist threat to “severe”, the second highest in its classification system.
The notice, released on May 1, warns that a terrorist attack is “highly probable”, in line with the assessment of the UK authorities. According to the statement, the increased risk responds to an uptick both in threats linked to extremist Islamic terrorism and to extreme left-wing groups, reflecting a more volatile security environment
.The decision to raise the alert level came after a recent knife attack in North London, described by the authorities as an anti-Semitic incident. This fact set off security alarms and led to the reinforcement of preventive measures across
the country. In its statement, the US diplomatic representation recommended that its citizens remain vigilant in crowded places such as transportation centers, schools, hospitals, churches and tourist areas. He also advised avoiding predictable routines, keeping a low profile and reviewing his personal safety plans. The importance of reporting any suspicious activity to local authorities and of closely following official information and the media was also stressed
.
The United States response has been evaluated as an appropriate preventive measure in the face of an increasing risk scenario. This type of alert is part of the usual protocols for protecting citizens abroad and seeks to provide clear information to reduce exposure to potential threats.
