After the unexpected departure of Eduardo Domínguez, Estudiantes de La Plata already has a new head coach: Alexander "El Cacique" Medina. The Uruguayan will lead his first training session this Sunday afternoon and, if there are no changes, will make his debut on Wednesday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. against Newell’s, in Rosario, in the seventh round of the Torneo Apertura.
The leadership headed by Juan Sebastián Verón sped up negotiations to finalize the replacement and found in Medina its chosen one, with the key endorsement of sporting director Marcos Angeleri, who already knew him from his time as a player at Nacional. Martín Demichelis and Martín Palermo were also evaluated, but they were left behind in the final consideration.
El Cacique has not coached since April of last year, when he left Talleres, a club in which he had two spells. In the most recent one, he managed to win the 2023 International Supercup against River, the only title of his career as a coach. In his first spell at "T" (2019-2021) he qualified the team for the 2021 Sudamericana and the 2022 Libertadores.
