The Argentine ambassador in Washington, Alec Oxenford, confirmed that the long-awaited trade agreement between Argentina and the United States is already practically finished and that only the right moment to make it public remains to be defined.
“I've signed a confidentiality agreement. I can't comment because I participated in the conversations. It's, I would say, practically finished. Now it depends on finding the right moment for both parties to put the finishing touch on it and announce it”, stated the diplomat in a conversation with Radio Mitre.
This agreement takes place in a context of growing alignment between the governments of Donald Trump and Javier Milei, and in an economic scenario where the reforms promoted by the Argentine president are already generating confidence among the main international players.

In this regard, the ambassador described the recent tour of the president through the United States as a key milestone for the country's repositioning. “It was a historic tour”, he said about the trip that took Milei to Miami, Palm Beach, and New York. Oxenford highlighted the symbolic and strategic value of the President's presence at high-level international forums, where the selectivity of the guests made the difference.
“At the American Business Forum, where there were leading figures from the business, cultural, and political worlds, the only two were Donald Trump and Javier Milei”, he emphasized.
The diplomat stated that the Argentine president's participation in those meetings allowed him to "communicate his ideas to the world and gain support for Argentina," at a time when three unprecedented factors in recent history are consolidating: "a clear leadership from the President; very explicit international support, led by the United States; and now internal backing, which became evident with the elections," he remarked.
During the tour, conversations with business leaders and international political figures revolved around the economic reforms and their impact. “They once again highlighted the reforms and the progress of the economic plan in Argentina. This is very important because, after two years in office, not only can you see the list of all the reforms, which is impressive for the short time that has passed, but also the impact they're starting to have. And they're starting to see this impact and, I would say, very clearly express their interest in doubling down on investment in Argentina”, Oxenford explained.

The ambassador also linked the country's macroeconomic stability to the support from Washington. “A result like the one we're seeing in all the variables wouldn't be possible if there weren't macroeconomic order. And I believe that macroeconomic order is partly related to the perceived support that exists from our main ally, which is the United States”, he stated.
Finally, Oxenford expressed optimism about Argentina's immediate future: “We're perhaps heading toward the first opportunity in 80 years to break out of this tremendous cycle of decline and postponement, to truly start moving forward, looking up and ahead, a path of prosperity for Argentines. We're already on that path. We have an unbelievable opportunity”, he concluded.
