While Boca is trying to straighten out its football path in the Torneo Apertura, Juan Román Riquelme is working behind the scenes to pull off a major market move. The Xeneize president has been holding talks for several months with José María Giménez, defender for Atlético de Madrid and the Uruguayan national team, with the aim of strengthening the squad with a view to the Copa Libertadores.
The idea is that the center-back, 31 years old, could join in the middle of the year or after the 2026 World Cup, at a key moment for the club due to the start of the Copa Libertadores knockout stages. Giménez, a historic reference for the Colchonero, has a contract until June 2028, although there reportedly is an agreement that would allow him to leave earlier under certain conditions.
According to reports on DSports Radio, the footballer is going through a delicate family situation that would lead him to consider a change of direction in his career. In that context, he would have reached an agreement to terminate his contract with Atlético in June, as long as he doesn't continue at another club in Europe. That clause would be decisive and would open the door to a possible move to South American football.
