Bombshell: Marcelo Gallardo renews with River for one more year

River begins a new institutional era with a significant decision. In his first days at the helm of the club, Stéfano Di Carlo decided to confirm Marcelo Gallardo's continuity as head coach of the professional squad, thus dispelling doubts about the "Muñeco"'s future amid the club's complex footballing present.

Through a press conference, Di Carlo and Gallardo officially announced the contract renewal, which will extend until December 2026. This is the first major political gesture by the brand-new president, who replaced Jorge Brito and seeks to send a message of stability and internal support.

On Tuesday, Di Carlo visited River Camp and held a conversation with the coach, manager Enzo Francescoli, the coaching staff, and the squad. The meeting served to convey a message of unity and confidence in the football project, despite the adverse results of recent weeks.

The support went beyond the symbolic, as the board presented a formal renewal offer, which Gallardo accepted without sporting conditions, guaranteeing his stay for one more year, regardless of the outcome of the 2025 season.

Terms of the new contract

The coach's continuity is part of an economic restructuring that Di Carlo plans to implement at the institution. According to reports, River will impose a salary cap for the squad and contracts based on productivity, both for players and the coaching staff. The measure aims to reduce operating expenses and organize the finances, one of the most criticized aspects of the previous administration.

This way, Gallardo will coach River at least until December 2026, with the possibility of reviewing his continuity, as has happened in previous stages. With institutional support and a renewed project, the "Muñeco" faces a new cycle at the helm of the team with the challenge of rebuilding the competitive level and maintaining the prestige that marked his successful tenure at the club.

Statements by Di Carlo and Gallardo at the press conference

River's new president began the conference by detailing the terms of Gallardo's new contract with the club: "We have agreed to extend Marcelo Gallardo's contract that binds him to River until December 31, 2026. That decision is based on two issues: one quite obvious, which is fulfilling the promise made to River's members. We have gone through an electoral process in which we made clear definitions regarding the football project. We always said that this project has a first and last name, which is Marcelo Gallardo, and that's how River's members chose us. We're fulfilling that proposal extended to the members".

He also emphasized the importance of supporting the process during a difficult time: "In good times, it's easy: it's simply about being there and staying, there are no major complexities. In bad times, which every process has, one must support, provide backing with firm conviction, accompany, and deepen the path that one is convinced of, even if it goes against what seems intuitive".

"It is important to clarify something that sometimes is not clear, which has to do with the understanding that no one has the keys to the club: the keys belong to River's members, and they give them to each administration, and each administration chooses the direction of its football project. That's how this institution works. Both Marcelo and I are clear that River is above everything", he added.

"This is a new starting point, a turning point to reaffirm our deep conviction that we have a common goal, which is for River to win again, and we're not going to move from that. We deeply believe in that and in the work capacity of this coaching staff. Without a doubt, Marcelo is always the best for River", he concluded.

Meanwhile, Gallardo first thanked the opportunity to continue leading the Millonario: "I want to thank Stéfano for his conviction. Not only him but the entire board. This is a moment of sporting adversity that I believe River's history has gone through many times. Regarding that, I simply have to say that we're not oblivious to reality. We know what the sporting reality is, we know that this year's objectives were not as we would have liked, and we're fully aware of that".

Then, the "Muñeco" referred to his desire to continue with his project at River: "From my confidence, my conviction, my desire, my motivation, and the energy I have to keep raising the stakes. Stéfano also mentioned this regarding what's coming. That's what sustains us. I want to thank for that, a special mention to all those fans who genuinely show unconditional support at this moment for River. Beyond the person, for this moment".

He also emphasized the importance of River above any individual: "No one is above River. No one. But I'm sure that at least for the one speaking to you, the desire, the energy, the motivation, the dedication I put into my profession, and the passion with which I face each day will be the commitment I will have to the club until the day I leave".

Finally, the Millonario's coach expressed confidence in a quick sporting recovery: "The desire to turn the situation around because I understand that things will change. This football crisis will pass. It will pass. Things like this happen, just as many other things in life. That's what keeps me here and makes me take on this with the conviction I have so that we can all create a healthy space again where we can embrace, talk, support each other, and move forward".

At the end of the conference, Di Carlo added a key comment: "Anyone at River who believes there is room for comfort and complacency is a carriage that gets detached. It stays behind. That's not our style". "I believe I have with Marcelo an absolute identification in terms of how to live, work, and do things. I believe in him, this is a situation that predates us. River will win again, we have absolute certainty", he concluded.
