The special envoy of the United States, Steve Witkoff, confirmed that he met with the exiled Iranian prince Reza Pahlavi under the direct instruction of President Donald Trump, as part of Washington's efforts to assess different perspectives on the situation in Iran. The statement was made during an interview, where the diplomat detailed the scope and limits of the meeting.
"I have had a meeting with him at the president's direction," Witkoff stated. The envoy described Pahlavi as a "firm" person and committed to his country, although he made it clear that the White House's decisions will not be determined by the prince's proposals. "This is going to be about President Trump's policies, not Mr. Pahlavi's policies," he emphasized.
The outreach to a prominent figure of the Iranian opposition in exile is taking place in a context of growing tension between Washington and Tehran, especially regarding the Iranian nuclear program and the U.S. military presence in the region.

According to Witkoff, the U.S. president is interested in hearing "everyone's views" and remains open to new ideas and ways of addressing the Iranian challenge.
During the interview, the envoy explained that Trump is curious about Iran's resistance to the pressure exerted by the United States, including the significant U.S. naval and maritime presence in the area.
According to Witkoff, the president believes that he has multiple strategic options, but he finds it striking that the Iranian authorities have not sought a more direct rapprochement with Washington.

In particular, Trump doesn't understand why Tehran has not explicitly stated that it doesn't intend to develop a nuclear weapon or presented concrete proposals to prove it.
"He doesn't understand why the Iranian side has not approached us and said: "We say we do not want a weapon, so this is what we are prepared to do"," the envoy recounted. However, he acknowledged that convincing Iran to adopt that approach has proved complicated.
Witkoff also revealed that the president has instructed him, together with his adviser Jared Kushner, to insist that Iran stop enriching uranium and send its nuclear material out of the country.

According to the position of the U.S. administration, the Iranian program far exceeds civilian needs and poses significant proliferation risks.
The envoy's statements reflect a strategy that combines pressure and openness to indirect dialogue. While Washington keeps firm demands regarding the Iranian nuclear program, it also explores contacts and listens to alternative voices, including opposition figures such as Pahlavi.
Nevertheless, the central message conveyed by Witkoff is that any final decision will depend exclusively on President Trump and on the course that his administration decides to take toward Iran.
