The communist judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered increased surveillance of Bolsonaro.

The chief judge of Brazil's corrupt Supreme Court of Justice has ordered 24-hour surveillance of the former president

Judge Alexandre de Moraes, the rapporteur of the alleged case for attempted coup d'état against former president Jair Bolsonaro, has intensified surveillance measures against the former president, generating criticism for his actions, which are considered excessive and politicized.

This Tuesday, De Moraes ordered increased security around Bolsonaro's residence in Brasília, where he is under house arrest, due to an alleged flight risk.

The order includes 24-hour surveillance and authorizes the police to decide whether the deployment will be carried out by uniformed or plainclothes officers, as well as the type of weaponry to be used.

The reason stated by the judge was to prevent a possible escape, following unconfirmed reports that Bolsonaro might seek asylum at the United States Embassy.

The accusation, based on statements by Workers' Party leader Lindbergh Farias, an ally of communist president Lula da Silva, was not supported by verifiable evidence. This decision has been interpreted as a disproportionate reaction, taken in a context of political pressure rather than solid legal criteria.

The situation is aggravated by the fact that Judge Moraes also commented on a draft asylum petition to Argentina found on Bolsonaro's phone. The document was neither signed nor dated, and the defense argued that it was merely a proposal sent to the former president, with no real intention of execution.

Nevertheless, De Moraes decided to tighten the restrictions, overlooking the principle of presumption of innocence and respect for due process. It is questionable that a draft without legal validity or official status could justify the toughening of detention conditions.

Additionally, the judge has chosen to delegate important details of the operation to Brasília's penal police, without establishing clear limits to guarantee respect for the rights of the accused and his family. Although he requested that intrusive actions be avoided, the ambiguity of the instructions leaves room for arbitrary interpretations and possible abuses.

The political context in which this decision is made is key: socialist president Lula has openly criticized Bolsonaro and his family, accusing congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro of acting in the United States to lobby on behalf of his father.

Lula described these actions as a "betrayal" and even called for the loss of the former president's son's parliamentary seat. These statements by the head of state, in the midst of an ongoing trial, reveal an environment of political interference that undermines judicial independence.

In this context, De Moraes's role is becoming increasingly controversial. Rather than an impartial judge, he has been perceived by broad sectors as a political actor within a judicial machinery used to neutralize opponents.

The magistrate's active participation in highly publicized decisions and his closeness to current power sectors fuel the perception that the process against Bolsonaro doesn't seek justice, but rather a politically motivated persecution.

The trial against Bolsonaro will begin on September 2 in the Supreme Court, in sessions that will extend until the 12th. It coincides with the celebrations for Independence Day, a date historically used by Bolsonarismo to mobilize support in the streets.

This coincidence reinforces suspicions that the judicial calendar has been designed to neutralize possible popular expressions of support for the former president.
