More than a week after the closure of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA opened a disciplinary procedure against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for various incidents recorded during the tournament and also initiated individual proceedings against four members of the Argentine National Team for what happened in the final against Spain.

According to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, the AFA is under investigation for alleged violations of articles 13, 14, 15, and 17 of the Disciplinary Code. The opening of the case includes chants and gestures considered discriminatory, delays in the start of matches, non-compliance with security protocols, throwing objects from the stands, and the display of messages deemed inappropriate, such as the flag with the inscription of the Malvinas Islands shown after the semifinal against England.

Additionally, FIFA confirmed that it received the report prepared by the attorney appointed to investigate the incidents that occurred at the end of the final between Argentina and Spain. Based on its conclusions, it decided to open disciplinary proceedings against several participants in the match.

Leandro Paredes faces three charges for alleged assaults, while Nahuel Molina was charged with two alleged assaults (one completed and another attempted), in addition to one charge for supposed unsportsmanlike conduct. Meanwhile, Roberto Ayala, a member of the Argentine coaching staff, is also under investigation for an alleged assault, while Thiago Almada was accused of a possible unsportsmanlike conduct.

On the Spanish side, midfielder Pablo Martín Páez Gavira, better known as Gavi, was also notified of the opening of a case for an alleged unsportsmanlike conduct.

The opening of the proceedings does not imply an immediate sanction. As FIFA explained, both the AFA and the players and coaching staff involved will have the opportunity to present their defenses before the Disciplinary Committee analyzes the evidence and issues a final resolution on each of the cases.

For now, the organization has not reported what the potential sanctions could be, as they will depend on the individual evaluation of the charges made in each case.
