Formula 1: Hamilton criticized the FIA for the possible removal of the Barcelona GP
Lewis Hamilton expressed his concern about the removal of historic circuits and questioned the creation of new tracks
Formula 1 announced the official calendar for the 2026 season this Tuesday, which confirmed the definitive removal of the iconic Imola circuit. In its place, among the 24 scheduled races, a second Grand Prix in Spain will be added, which will take place on the streets of Madrid, as had already been anticipated some time ago.
Lewis Hamilton recently addressed the disappearance of traditional circuits from the calendar and the addition of new venues, a trend with which he still doesn't feel comfortable. In a conversation with the press, the British driver mentioned the possible removal of the Circuit de Barcelona, which will host its last Grand Prix under the current contract in 2026, making way for Madrid as the new host of the Spanish GP.
"I think losing any of the classics(circuits), and this is one of the classics, is a shame because, as I've said, it's a great city," Lewis remarked. "There are many fans here in Spain, particularly since Fernando (Alonso) is here. The important thing is that there continues to be a race in Spain," he added.

Then, the seven-time world champion emphasized: "It feels like the home of Formula 1 here. It's fine to progress as a sport and I know Madrid, it's a great location. I hope they're able to build a good circuit, although I don't have much hope."
To conclude, Hamilton was critical of the way FIA and Formula 1 have managed the creation of new circuits: "Building new circuits is very much hit or miss. Ninety percent of the time it's for the worse," he stated. Although he softened his stance by saying: "As long as they're able to build a circuit that's better or just as good, I don't mind."
