Formula 1: Colapinto did what he could in Barcelona, and McLaren seems unreachable

The Argentine driver suffered from his single-seater's poor performance, barely changing his position compared to the start, while Piastri and Norris are pulling away in the standings

Despite the poor performance of the A525 at the Spanish Grand Prix, Franco Colapinto managed to climb a few positions, finishing in 15th place after starting 18th.

At the start, he briefly overtook Sainz (Williams) and Ocon (Haas), but both quickly regained their positions.

At one point, thanks to pit stops by other drivers, Colapinto moved up to 13th, until he was called to the pits due to excessive wear on the front tire, where he switched from softs to mediums, rejoining in 19th.

Struggling to maintain pace, he was overtaken by Alonso, Bortoleto, and Sainz again, and later was lapped by the leaders. Later, during his second stop, he fitted another set of softs and set his best lap in 1m18s353ms.

Towards the end of the race, after the Safety Car was deployed due to Antonelli's retirement, Colapinto took advantage to make a final stop and tackle the end with fresh tires. In the final stretch, he got his lap back and, on the last lap, overtook Ocon and benefited from a penalty to Bearman (Haas), thus finishing in fifteenth place.

Colapinto's comments after the race

The Argentine did not have his best performance at the Barcelona GP and appeared visibly frustrated by his showing. "I wanted to go faster and get closer toPierre and that's why the degradation with the car ahead. We couldn't manage the degradation well, it was a long race".

"I think we need to work to come back stronger, to understand a bit what happened, what the main problem was next weekend, because at times we weren't so consistent, then faster and closer to Pierre, and then we lost more time. We need to understand why, and come back stronger in Canada", Colapinto analyzed.

Piastri extends his lead, with Norris and Leclerc on the podium

Oscar Piastri dominated the Spanish Grand Prix and achieved his seventh victory in the Formula 1 (fifth in 2025). The Australian once again led McLaren alongside Lando Norris and remains at the top of the championship with 186 points, ten more than the Briton.

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) completed the podium after a tight maneuver with Max Verstappen (Red Bull) at the restart. The Dutchman, upset with the team's strategy and forced to give a position back to Russell (Mercedes), was involved in a controversial move that resulted in a 10-second penalty for "causing a collision," dropping him to tenth place.

Behind the podium finished Russell (Mercedes), Hülkenberg (Sauber), Hamilton (Ferrari), Hadjar (Racing Bulls), Gasly (Alpine), and Alonso (Aston Martin), who scored his first points of the year.

The next round of the championship will be the Canadian Grand Prix, from June 13 to 15, at the "Gilles Villeneuve" circuit in Montreal.
