Gianni Infantino once again placed soccer on a level that goes beyond sports. During his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, the president of FIFA highlighted the role of the 2026 World Cup as an event capable of building bridges in an international context marked by political and cultural divisions.

During his presentation, the official defined soccer as "the most democratic sport" and stated that the next World Cup has as its central objective "uniting the world." In that context, he once again expressed his support for the U.S. president, Donald Trump, after the presentation of the peace plan for Gaza promoted from the White House.

"Of course we live in a divided world. We support peace. We have seen President Trump sign that agreement, FIFA's greatest support for the president, because we all have to support peace. People trust FIFA, they trust the host countries. America is going to welcome the world," Infantino stated.

The head of the world's highest soccer body elaborated on the sport's social and political impact by asserting that there is no other phenomenon with a similar capacity to generate consensus. "There is nothing like what soccer does. It changes the spirit, not only of people, but of countries," he pointed out.

As an example, he recounted conversations with heads of state who confessed to him that they had achieved periods of internal stability after qualifying for a World Cup. "I had heads of state in certain countries who told me when they qualified, "At least I have peace in my country and there are no civil wars until June, when the World Cup begins." We want to unite the world. We need occasions to bring people together," Infantino concluded.

The meeting with Milei

In addition to his speech, the president of FIFA also met with Javier Milei during his last day in Davos. Although there are photos of the meeting, the information about the topics they addressed in their conversation has not yet come to light.
