Historic: Trump patrolled the streets of Washington D.C. alongside federal forces

The president visited the law enforcement forces deployed to combat crime and homelessness in the capital as part of the federal intervention ordered last week

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, patrolled the streets of Washington D.C. on Thursday night alongside National Guard personnel who began their deployment in the U.S. capital last week.

The presidential visit takes place in the context of Trump's decision to intervene in the security of a city that is municipally controlled by Democrats and has reached alarming levels of crime.

"I've never received so many calls thanking me for what I did in Washington D.C. from people I haven't gone to a restaurant with in, literally, four years. They told me that what I've done is historic, that they felt unsafe," the Republican leader emphasized during an exchange with the press.

Trump brought pizzas and hamburgers for the troops.

True to his style, the president shared a meal with the security officers and had fun with them. "I brought great hamburgers cooked by the White House and I brought pizza. I'll eat with you and we'll have a little fun, then we'll get back to work and take care of these criminals," he said.

The presidential visit to the capital was organized in just a few hours. "I think tonight I'll go out with the Police and the Army, of course. So we're going to do a job. The National Guard is great, they've done a fantastic job," were the words Trump used during a radio interview to announce the new event on his agenda.

U.S. authorities said this morning that federal forces have participated in more than 600 arrests during the past week. Of these arrests, 251 were detentions of migrants who were in the country irregularly and had criminal records.

In a similar vein, the police union emphasized in a statement that no murders have been reported in the capital since the federal intervention. Both car thefts and robberies in general have decreased by 83% and 46% respectively.
