After the despicable murder of the young Ukrainian woman in the Charlotte subway, her boyfriend launched strong criticism against one of those responsible

The murder of Iryna Zarutska, a young Ukrainian refugee who was seeking a safe life in the United States, has caused shock, anger, and deep sadness among her loved ones and the Charlotte, North Carolina, community.

Her partner, Stanislav "Stas" Nikulytsia, publicly shared his pain on social media, posting an image of the two of them in swimsuits, accompanied by a broken heart emoji, in addition to openly criticizing the "judge" who allowed Iryna's killer to be released.

Zarutska was fatally stabbed on August 22 on a Charlotte train. The main suspect, Decarlos Brown, is a repeat offender with more than a dozen prior arrests.

In January, Brown had been released by magistrate Teresa Stokes on an unsecured bond, simply with the promise to appear at a future hearing. This decision has caused great outrage, especially from Nikulytsia, who shared clips in his Instagram stories harshly criticizing Stokes, even accurately pointing out that she is not a qualified attorney.

Nikulytsia and Zarutska had been living together for a year in Charlotte, and he was described as her "life partner" in the young woman's obituary. After her death, Nikulytsia also changed his Instagram bio, adding a mushroom emoji, one of Iryna's favorite symbols, along with a broken heart, as a personal tribute.

Zarutska's family recounted that they began to worry when she did not arrive home at the expected time. Through the cell phone's location system, they discovered that she was still at the station, which alerted them that something was wrong. When they arrived at the scene, they received the tragic news: Iryna had been murdered on the train.

Iryna Zarutska fled the war in Ukraine in August 2022 with her mother and two younger brothers. Despite the short time in the United States, she managed to integrate quickly, working at a senior care center and leaving a positive mark on her community.

More than 100 people, many of them residents of the center where she worked, attended her funeral, with transportation specially organized so they could pay their respects.

Her family stated that, although the U.S. State Department offered to cover the costs to repatriate her remains to Ukraine, they decided that she would be buried on U.S. soil. "She felt this country was her home," explained an uncle of the victim. He also emphasized that the family never wanted to be a burden to the United States, but rather to build a new life full of hope.

In an emotional statement, the family said they were "devastated beyond words" and asked local authorities and the Charlotte transit system to take urgent measures to ensure passenger safety. "This could have happened to anyone traveling on the train that night. We are committed to making sure this never happens again," they concluded.
