Japan's prime minister Sanae Takaichiannounced the dissolution of the Lower House of Parliament, a decision that paved the way for the calling of snap elections barely three months after she took office. The announcement came at the start of the ordinary session of the Diet, confirming earlier reports released by Japanese media.
Takaichi explained that the dissolution of Parliament was due to the need to obtain a clear mandate from the citizenry in order to consolidate her leadership and ensure the country's political stability.
The prime minister stressed that Japan faces major economic, security, and diplomatic challenges, and she argued that snap elections would allow the Government to move forward more solidly in implementing its program.
La primera ministra recalcó la necesidad de obtener un mandato claro y oficial por parte de la ciudadanía
With this decision, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) seeks to strengthen its position in the Lower House and expand the governing coalition's majority together with the Japan Innovation Party. The Executive trusted that it could capitalize on the high levels of popular support for Takaichi's cabinet, as well as the perception of stability and continuity in economic management.
The announcement had an immediate impact on the financial markets. The Tokyo Stock Exchange recorded an increase of more than 3%, driven by expectations of political stability and by investors' confidence in the Government's economic agenda. Analysts highlighted that a renewed mandate could favor more active fiscal policies and a greater capacity to respond to economic challenges.
On the international stage, the announcement was interpreted as a step to strengthen Japan's position in a complex regional context. Broad electoral support would allow the Executive to face more firmly the diplomatic tensions with China, which escalated after Takaichi's statements on the defense of Taiwan, and to respond to the trade restrictions imposed by Beijing, especially in strategic sectors.
Takaichi asumió tras la dimisión de Shigeru Ishiba
Japan held its previous general elections in October 2024, when the LDP lost its parliamentary majority under the leadership of then prime minister Shigeru Ishiba. His subsequent resignation paved the way for Sanae Takaichi's historic arrival to the post in October 2025, making her the first woman to lead the Japanese Government.
With the dissolution of the Lower House, Japan officially entered an electoral period, in a call that was presented by the Executive as an opportunity to strengthen governability and provide the country with solid leadership in the face of internal and external challenges, with the aim of fighting globalism and illegal immigration, which have been a growing problem in the Asian country.
