It's official: Toluca has purchased 50% of Santiago Simón's transfer rights, and he is leaving River.

The 23-year-old midfielder from Millonarios has recently lost consideration and will seek to get more playing time in Mexican soccer in exchange for a multi-million dollar fee

Although the Argentine soccer transfer window closed on July 24, clubs can add an extra spot to sign a player for each player they sell abroad. In this context, River completed the sale of Santiago Simón, a 23-year-old midfielder who hadn't been considered by Marcelo Gallardo in the second half of the year.

The midfielder, who hasn't played since April 23, was transferred to Toluca in Mexico. According to journalist Germán García Grova,  River sold 50% of his rights for 3.5 million dollars, with a clause that obligates the Mexican club to acquire an additional 25% based on sporting objectives.

Meanwhile,  Simón will sign a three-year contract with the current champion of Mexican soccer, which is managed by Turco Mohamed.

This operation allows River to add an extra spot to sign players until August 31, an option that could be useful given the large number of injured players in the squad.

With his departure, the Millonario reduced its list of expendable players to just four: Federico Gattoni (returns to Sevilla at the end of the year), Matías Rojas (scouted by Portland Timbers), Manuel Lanzini (scouted by American and Arab soccer) and Matías Kranevitter (scouted by several Argentine teams).

During his time in Núñez since his debut in 2020, Simón played 146 matches, scored 6 goals, and provided 16 assists. He was also part of the titles in the 2021 and 2023 Professional Leagues, two Champions Trophies (2021 and 2023), and one Argentine Supercup (2023).
