Ogro Fabbiani spoke with Chiquito Romero to have him join Newell's.
The coach of the Rosario team called Boca's goalkeeper, but Keylor Navas's continuity stopped everything
Before Keylor Navas's continuity at Newell’s was secured, Cristian Fabbiani, the team's head coach, contacted Sergio Romero, who isn't opposed to leaving Boca and showed openness to moving to Rosario.
The 38-year-old goalkeeper, whose contract ends at the end of the year, is no longer a primary consideration for Miguel Ángel Russo, being behind Agustín Marchesín, Leandro Brey, and even Javier García. Given this scenario, it wouldn't be far-fetched to consider a short-term departure for the former goalkeeper of the Argentina National Team.

According to various sources, Newell’s's offer excited Romero, who has already recovered from surgery on his right knee. However, the transfer fell through, since Ignacio Astore, president of Lepra, rejected a 1 million dollar offer from Pumas de México for Keylor and demanded at least 3 million, thus confirming the Costa Rican goalkeeper's continuity.
In that context, Keylor Navas, who has a contract with Newell’s until 2026, will remain the starting goalkeeper. If an early departure does occur, Romero could once again become a strong option to reinforce Lepra's goal.
How long has it been since he last played?
Romero's last official match was in November 2024, in the 0-0 draw against Huracán on matchday 24 of the Professional League. Since then, he hasn't played any more minutes due to synovitis in his right knee and the presence of Marchesín between the posts.

His time at the club was marked by his outstanding performance in the penalty shootout that took Boca to the 2023 Copa Libertadores final, but also by a violent altercation with fans after the defeat in the 2024 Copa de la Liga Superclásico. Beyond that, his spell with Xeneize was rather poor.
