The socialist president of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, made a striking statement on Monday during a speech in Barcelona, where he included Argentina in a list alongside the United States, Russia, and Israel, warning about the influence of foreign leaders on European politics. The reference to Buenos Aires, indirectly aimed at President Javier Milei, places the country among the international actors that the Spanish leader himself considers relevant for the political future of the continent.
The statement took place during the international forum World in Progress, held in Barcelona, where the socialist leader questioned the rise of right-wing movements in Europe and warned about their international links. In that context, Sánchez asserted that there are political forces subjected to foreign interests and defended the need to prevent these organizations from contributing to the end of socialism in Europe.
"Spain is governed from Spain, not from Washington, not from Tel Aviv, certainly not from Moscow or Buenos Aires", stated the Spanish president. With this phrase, Sánchez placed the Argentine capital in the same list as the main power centers of the United States, Israel, and Russia, countries that hold prominent positions in the international geopolitical landscape.
