Shinobi: Art of Vengeance adds Dr. Eggman as a boss in its upcoming DLC

The new SEGA Shinobi will arrive on August 29 and has confirmed a DLC in 2026 featuring Dr. Eggman and other classic villains

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is the new installment in SEGA's iconic action and platforming franchise. The title will be released on August 29, 2025, marking the return of a classic that hasn't had a new version since Shinobi 3D on Nintendo 3DS (2011).

The game keeps the essence of the saga with a gameplay style in 2D focused on precision, combat, and challenging platforming. With development led by the same team that revitalized Streets of Rage 4, SEGA's bet aims to restore the relevance of its historic franchises.

Sega Villains Stage: the DLC featuring Dr. Eggman

The company confirmed the first additional content for the game, titled SEGA Villains Stage, scheduled for early 2026.

Two characters fight on a snowy, ruined stage; one throws fire while the other appears to be shrouded in dark energy.

This DLC will be available for those who purchase the digital deluxe version, which will allow them to unlock it as soon as it's released. The big news will be the appearance of Dr. Eggman, the classic antagonist from Sonic the Hedgehog,  as one of the main bosses.

Alongside him will be two other iconic SEGA villains, whose names haven't been revealed yet, keeping fans in suspense. It's still unclear whether the content will be a boss rush, with a series of boss battles, or if it will add entirely new levels.

Community and speedrun competitions

The return of Shinobi doesn't only have a nostalgic impact. Currently, players can already try a free demo on different platforms, which has caused a strong movement in the gaming community.

Several animated-style characters face off on a bridge while one of them is engulfed in a burst of yellow energy at the center.

SEGA is also promoting speedrun competitions, encouraging players to complete the demo in the shortest time possible. This practice strengthens online interaction, the creation of strategies, and the connection among fans around the world.

Shinobi and the rebirth of classic sagas

The launch of Art of Vengeance is part of SEGA's strategy to revive classic franchises like Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi. The goal is to reposition its historic characters for new generations of players.

The inclusion of well-known villains such as Dr. Eggman ensures additional appeal for a broad audience, which is not only looking for action and platforming, but also nods to the company's iconic universes.

With this approach, Shinobi promises a participatory experience that goes beyond the initial release and keeps the franchise alive with new challenges.
