In a new batch of files declassified by the Trump administration, strong ties between the Democratic mayor's mother and Epstein's wife have been revealed

A new batch of documents linked to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, published Friday by the United States Department of Justice, once again exposes the breadth of his social network and that of his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and includes the mention of filmmaker Mira Nair, mother of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
The files (more than three million pages, which contain emails, images, and videos collected during federal investigations) include an email dated October 21, 2009, sent by publicist Peggy Siegal to Epstein. In the message, Siegal reports having attended a party after the premiere of the film Amelia, directed by Nair, held at Ghislaine Maxwell's residence in Manhattan.
"I just left Ghislaine's house… afterparty for the movie", wrote Siegal in the email, in which she also mentions the presence of Bill Clinton, former president of the United States, and Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, as well as the director herself, Mira Nair, and other figures from the cultural and social spheres.

The film Amelia, released in 2009, is a "biopic" about aviator Amelia Earhart, starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere. In the message, Siegal describes the reaction of those attending as "lukewarm", although she notes that the film was better received by female audiences. The email also includes disparaging comments about other promotional events linked to the film, organized in department stores in New York.
The email doesn't contain accusations of illegal conduct or suggest criminal activities during the event. However, its publication has reignited the public debate about the social circle that surrounded Epstein and Maxwell even after Epstein was convicted in 2008 of sex crimes against minors and was officially registered as a sex offender.
Maxwell, who organized the party at her home, was convicted in 2021 for her role in the recruitment and abuse of minors for Epstein and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. Epstein, meanwhile, died in August 2019 in a New York jail while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, in a death that authorities ruled a suicide.

The mention of Mira Nair in the documents has caused particular attention due to her family relationship with Zohran Mamdani, current mayor of New York and a prominent figure of the progressive left.
The Department of Justice has reiterated that appearing in Epstein's files doesn't imply guilt, but rather reflects some type of contact, communication, or social encounter with the financier or his circle. Even so, the documents offer a more detailed view of how Epstein maintained access to circles of power after his first conviction, associating with political leaders, businesspeople, academics, and artists.
According to the Department of Justice, part of the material was redacted to protect the identity of the victims and avoid collateral damage, but the publication seeks to respond to years of public pressure for greater transparency.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the disclosure was carried out "with extreme care", emphasizing that the objective is to shed light on the workings of Epstein's network without putting at risk people who are not involved in crimes.
