The President of the United States, Donald Trump, launched a harsh criticism against the Government of the United Kingdom for having agreed to transfer the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Through his social network Truth Social, the President described the decision as "a great stupidity" and presented it as a clear example of geopolitical weakness that puts Western security at risk.
Before traveling to Switzerland to participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump used the Chagos case to reinforce his stance on the need for the United States to take control of Greenland, a territory that he considers key for global defense.
Chagos, strategic weakness and a message to rival powers

Trump strongly questioned the fact that the United Kingdom has decided to hand over territories of high strategic value in the Indian Ocean. In particular, he targeted the transfer of Diego Garcia Island, where a key military base for the United States and the United Kingdom itself operates.
"Surprisingly, our 'magnificent' NATO ally plans to cede the island of Diego Garcia, home to a vital U.S. military base, to Mauritius, for no reason at all", wrote the President. According to Trump, this decision sends a signal of fragility that doesn't go unnoticed by powers such as China and Russia.
Greenland and the logic of force
In his message, Trump directly linked the Chagos case with his insistence on moving forward regarding Greenland. He pointed out that the transfer of strategic territories by European allies demonstrates why the United States can't afford to make similar mistakes.
