The president of the US described the British territorial concession as a serious strategic weakness and linked it to global security

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, launched a harsh criticism against the Government of the United Kingdom for having agreed to transfer the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Through his social network Truth Social, the President described the decision as "a great stupidity" and presented it as a clear example of geopolitical weakness that puts Western security at risk.
Before traveling to Switzerland to participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump used the Chagos case to reinforce his stance on the need for the United States to take control of Greenland, a territory that he considers key for global defense.
Chagos, strategic weakness and a message to rival powers
Trump criticó al Reino Unido por entregar territorios estratégicos: 'Es una gran estupidez'
Trump strongly questioned the fact that the United Kingdom has decided to hand over territories of high strategic value in the Indian Ocean. In particular, he targeted the transfer of Diego Garcia Island, where a key military base for the United States and the United Kingdom itself operates.
"Surprisingly, our 'magnificent' NATO ally plans to cede the island of Diego Garcia, home to a vital U.S. military base, to Mauritius, for no reason at all", wrote the President. According to Trump, this decision sends a signal of fragility that doesn't go unnoticed by powers such as China and Russia.
Greenland and the logic of force
In his message, Trump directly linked the Chagos case with his insistence on moving forward regarding Greenland. He pointed out that the transfer of strategic territories by European allies demonstrates why the United States can't afford to make similar mistakes.

"The fact that the United Kingdom is ceding extremely important territories adds to a long list of national security reasons why Greenland must be acquired", he stated. For the President, only a firm stance can prevent hostile actors from expanding their influence in key regions.
"Powers only respect strength"
Trump stressed that China and Russia "only recognize strength" and maintained that, under his leadership, the United States has regained an unprecedented level of international respect. "After just one year, our country is once again respected", he emphasized, distinguishing his foreign policy from that of governments that, according to him, choose concession and weakness.
The President concluded his message by urging Denmark and European allies to "do the right thing" regarding Greenland, in a clear warning about the course that the West should take.

British response and internal criticism
From London, the Chief Secretary to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Darren Jones, defended the agreement by assuring that it provides "very important security guarantees" for the operation of Diego Garcia. However, he acknowledged that the international context is increasingly volatile.
The decision of the Labour executive was strongly questioned by the opposition. The Conservative foreign affairs spokesperson, Priti Patel, agreed with Trump in describing the agreement as harmful to British national security. Along the same lines, Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, welcomed the fact that Trump has "vetoed the surrender" of the Chagos Islands.
